Ahmedabad city has a lot of mosques to offer out
of them one of the most older mosque is that of the Rani Rupmati, a
Hindu wife of a Muslim ruler, Sultan Mahmud Begado. This mosque was
built between 1430 and 1440. The central dome in this beautiful
mosque is elevated to allow light enter and go around the base of
the dome. This mosque also, like so many of Ahmedabad early mosques,
displays a unique harmony of the elements of both Hindu and Islamic
design making it a true architectural heritage.
Mosque has three domes and are supported by pillars out of these
three the central dome allows natural light to illuminate the
interior of the mosque. Like a lot of other unfortunate mosques this
mosque also lost a lot of its architectural beauty to one of the
several earthquakes that struck this particular region. This mosque
lost its minarets in the huge earthquake of 1818, still a lot of
designs and carvings are still there to watch and admire.
