Jama Masjid, Juma Masjid, Jami Masjid these all
are names of the same mosque in Ahmedabad, built in 1423 by the
ruler of Ahmedabad, Ahmed Shah, this beautiful monument stands
beside Mahatma Gandhi road, to the east of the Teen Darwaja. It is
one of the finest mosques in India, supported by 260 pillars the 15
domes of this mosque, are supported by these pillars at different
elevations. The mosque used to have minarets that were destroyed in
an earthquake in late 1950's. Although alot have been lost in
natural calamities or by one or another human reasons still this
mosque is one of its kind because of its architectural beauty and
sheer size.
This mosque was built using the yellow sandstones, although most of
this Ahmedabad mosque was built by using the items that were
actually salvaged by attacking and then demolishing many Hindu and
Jain temples. Legend suggests that the large black slab, buried
upside down near the main arch, is the base of a Jain idol and is
buried there so that the followers of the Muslim religion can tread
on it. This used to be one of the biggest mosques in India in
ancient times.
